FMU tennis earns academic honors

For the sixth consecutive year, the Francis Marion University women’s tennis team has earned All-Academic Team recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

In addition, four Patriot players garnered scholar-athlete recognition from the ITA: sophomores Nikita Berger and Fredrika Regner and freshmen Denise Hartmann and Eva Zannier.

To earn the award, a program must have a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). The Patriot women ended the year with a 3.536 GPA.

On the court, the FMU women posted a 14-8 record, a figure that showed a five-win improvement over 2018, and placed sixth in the PBC regular-season standings.

Pats ink shortstop

Francis Marion University baseball coach Art Inabinet has announced the signing of shortstop Sam Stonskas of Eldridge, Ia., for the upcoming season. Stonskas will transfer from Black Hawk College and will have two years of eligibility with the Patriots.

Stonskas, 5-8 and 165 pounds, batted .352 this past season for a 28-18 Braves squad. He scored 39 runs in 45 games and registered 12 doubles, two home runs, 29 runs batted in, a .422 on-base percentage, and six stolen bases.

Inabinet previously announced the signing of five high school seniors, an NCAA Division I transfer, and nine junior college transfers for the 2019-20 school year.

This past season’s Patriot squad posted a 10-win improvement over the previous season with a 28-21 mark, and FMU placed sixth during the 2019 Peach Belt Conference regular season.

Softball adds pair of transfers

Francis Marion University coach Stacey Vallee has announced the addition of third baseman Ashtyn Patterson of Andersonville, Tenn., and third baseman/ outfielder Jordan Carlson of Council Grove, Kan., who will both transfer to FMU for the 2019-20 school year.

Patterson joins the Patriot program after playing two seasons at Carson Newman University. As a sophomore, Patterson started 31 games primarily in a defensive role, but did drive in three runs in limited plate appearances.

Carlson will join the Patriots after playing two seasons at Butler Community College in Kansas. As a sophomore, she hit .327 with 11 extra-base hits, 33 runs scored, and 18 driven in.

She helped the Grizzlies post a two-year mark of 96-14 and reach both the 2018 and 2019 NJCAA National Tournaments. During her first year, Carlson appeared in 48 games, batted .303, and registered 11 RBIs and a .425 on-base percentage.

The pair brings to 14 the number of newcomers signed for the upcoming season.
