Equestrians qualify for championships
Several members of the Palmetto Pony Club have qualified to compete in the 2019 Championships East July 24-28 at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, N.C.
Each year the United States Pony Clubs offers championship competitions in seven disciplines; Dressage, Eventing, Show Jumping, Games, Polocrosse, Tetrathlon, and Quiz (a non-riding, knowledge based competition). Members compete as part of a team and are judged on riding abilities as well as horse management skills. Pony Club members must qualify at a Region Rally to compete at USPC Championships.
Following are the Palmetto Pony Club members from the Pee Dee Region that have qualified to compete at USPC Championships East:
_ Mary Elwyne Kennedy, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kennedy of Florence, is a D3. Mary Elwyne will compete on her 17-year-old red roan Quarter Horse gelding named Gilligan.
_ Gabby Strickland, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Strickland of Galivants Ferry, is a D3. Gabby will compete on her 8-year-old buckskin Quarter Horse mare named Vegas.
_ Abby Stevens, 14, daughter of Mrs. Stacey Stevens of Hartsville, is a D3. Abby will compete on her 20-year-old dark bay Irish Sport Horse gelding named Artex.
_ Belle DeVault, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip DeVault of Florence, is a D3. Belle will play the vital role of Stable Manager for the team.
_ Alex McAllister, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin McAllister of Pamplico, is a C1.
To be eligible to qualify in a mounted division of the 2019 USPC Championships, Pony Club members must hold a D3 certification or above and be at least 12 years of age.
