Wilson names court in honor of Pearl Moore
It was a signature day in the life of Pearl Moore.
The recently inducted Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer was cheered by a gymnasium filled with friends, family, alumni, students, faculty, and well-wishers as the basketball court at Wilson High School was named in her honor.
“It’s all quite overwhelming,” said Moore, a former Tiger and Francis Marion University standout.
Among those in attendance for the ceremony were two of her former coaches, Anne Long and Sylvia Hatchell. Hatchell coached at Francis Marion in the 1970s when Moore became the all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball history with 4,061 points.
During his opening remarks, Wilson Athletic Director Derrick McQueen said Moore has given her life not only to basketball, but to the community as well.
Moore remains an influential presence in the Florence community. Not long ago the city’s new basketball facility on Barnes Street was named in her honor.
