United Way gives car to lucky donor
The United Way of Florence County (UWFC) gave one lucky donor a brand new car to drive for one year at an event held at Mike Reichenbach Ford Lincoln on Wednesday, May 11. The drawing for the car was part of the UWFC’s 2015-2016 “You’re in the Driver’s Seat” campaign and was an opportunity to give back to the individuals who generously donate to the UWFC’s annual campaign.
Mike Reichenbach Ford Lincoln partnered with the UWFC for the drawing and provided a brand new 2015 Ford Fiesta to be the car given away. The ultimate winner of the car was Willie Lewis who has been an employee at WestRock for nearly 40 years.
The other nine finalists were Donald Brown from Assurant, Susan Brown from Florence School District 1, Trudy Brown from Johnson Controls Distribution Center, Laura Fenters from Carolinas Hospital System, Modestine Ham from PGBA, Lesli Kennedy from McLeod Health, Victor Kennedy from Performance Foodservice-Roma-IFH-Florence, Lisa May from Otis Elevators, and Crystal L. Thomas from Orr Company.
To be eligible for the drawing, an individual had to pledge or donate at least $100 to the UWFC as part of the 2015-2016 campaign. For every $100 donated or pledged, an individual could receive one entry into the drawing for the car. Ten finalists names were randomly drawn for the car giveaway and those finalists attended the event at Mike Reichenbach Ford Lincoln to determine the ultimate winner.
At the event, the finalists randomly drew numbers to determine the order in which they would draw keys. The finalists then drew their keys in order and each took turns testing to see if their key turned on the car. The finalist who had the key that turned the car on was the ultimate winner of the giveaway and would have the new car for one year to drive. Along with the grand prize of the new car, the UWFC also gave out three other prizes to those who had donated to the campaign.
These prizes included a three-night stay at the Sea Crest Oceanfront Resort in Myrtle Beach provided by HillSouth, a 46” HD Flat Screen TV provided by HillSouth with Xbox 360 and Kinect, and a Coleman Road Trip Propane Grill provided by the Florence Police Department. Similar to the car giveaway, an individual had to pledge or donate at least $100 to be eligible for these three prizes and they received one entry for every $100 given.
A random drawing of three names was conducted at the UWFC office on May 12 for the prizes. The winner of the three-night beach stay was Michelle Young from PGBA, the winner of the TV and Xbox was Wayne McQuade from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company, and the winner of the Coleman Grill was Terrence Brown from GE Healthcare.
Although the campaign prizes have been awarded, the UWFC will still continue to accept donations as part of the 2015-2016 annual campaign until the end of June. Donations made to the campaign are designated by the UWFC’s Community Investment Committee to programs in Florence County that best serve the needs of the community.
