Sloan named new editor of The News Journal

Bob Sloan, a veteran journalist with more than two decades of experience in the newspaper business, began work Monday as editor of The News Journal.

Sloan most recently worked as editor of The Link newspaper in Cheraw. He has previous served as editor of The Hartsville Messenger as well as The Cheraw Chronicle & The Chesterfield Advertiser in Cheraw. He replaces William M. Mingus III.

“I am excited about coming to work for The News Journal,” Sloan said. "I believe in community journalism and that people will read good news. I hope to serve this newspaper and the community in a respectable and responsible manner. Florence is growing and I hope The News Journal can grow right along with it.”

Originally from Hampton, Va., Sloan is a graduate of The University of Virginia at Wise in Wise, Va., with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Sloan lives in Society Hill and serves as pastor of two churches, Society Hill Presbyterian and Patrick Presbyterian. He has one grown daughter, Amanda.
