Seniors’ nutrition program now taking applications

The Senior Citizens Association in Florence County, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services will be issuing free coupons to individuals age 60 and older that may be used to purchase fresh produce at local participating farmers’ markets.

Each eligible person will receive $25 worth of coupons that may be used at participating farmers’ markets from June through Oct. 15. Seniors must apply online at www.benefitsportal.dss.sc.gov/#/benefits/sfmnp/application.

The deadline to apply is May 25. The coupons will be issued in a drive-thru formation on the designated days and times as follows:

June 8: Leatherman Senior Center, 600 Senior Way, Florence. Last names beginning with A-L will pick up vouchers between 9 a.m. and noon. Last names beginning with M-Z will pick up vouchers between 1 and 4 p.m.

June 9: Lake City Senior Center, 198 N. Acline St., Lake City. Last names beginning with A-L will pick up vouchers between 9 a.m. and noon. Last names beginning with M-Z will pick up vouchers between 1 and 4 p.m.

June 10: Baker Memorial Public Library, 298 W. Smith St., Timmonsville. Vouchers may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• Nutrition and Activity Site, 304 S. Hampton St.; Johnsonville. Vouchers may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library, 210 E. Hampton St., Olanta. Vouchers may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

June 11: Pamplico Public Library, 100 E. Main St., Pamplico. Vouchers may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Applications must be submitted online. Online applicants must meet household income eligibility limits.

Information regarding the income of all household members is required to determine online eligibility.

The goal of the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is to supplement the diets or low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious produce and to support South Carolina’s small farmers.
