S.C. Pecan Festival canceled due to COVID-19

There will be no Pecan Festival in Florence in 2020.

The Florence Downtown Development Corp. and the South Carolina Pecan Festival Committee announced Thursday that the 17th annual event, scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 6 in Downtown Florence, has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

According to a press release, the decision to cancel came after careful consideration of the health and safety of the event’s attendees, volunteers, staff, entertainers, and vendors, and after a collaborative review of the recently published AccelerateSC guidelines for resuming outdoor festivals and events with City of Florence officials, sponsors, and community partners. Organizers of the S.C. Pecan Festival participated in the statewide development of the guidelines in partnership with the SC Festival and Events Association and Main Street South Carolina.

“While this was a very difficult decision to make, we are certain that cancelling this year’s Pecan Festival was the right choice,” said Festival Chairman George Jebaily. “We’ve been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely; and our committee, City officials, and sponsors have unanimously agreed that we have a responsibility to be leaders in the community through the cancellation of one of this state’s largest gatherings.”

The committee postponed the decision to cancel this year’s event for as long as reasonably possible in order to allow the chance for the state’s rise in COVID-19 cases to subside; however, cases continue to increase across the state.

Vendors who have already signed up to participate in the 2020 festival will have the option of carrying their vendor space payments forward to 2021 or the receipt of a full refund.
