Pair named as scholars program candidates
Florence 1 Schools has announced that two seniors have been named candidates in the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Connor Fraley and John T. Halus, both of Wilson High School are among thousands nationally competing in the program.
More than 4,500 students were selected from 3.6 million applicants expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2021.
Candidates are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
Each year 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from that year’s senior class. All scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C. in June for the National Recognition Program, pending COVID case numbers. Students will participate in various events, enrichment activities and the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.
The Commission on Presidential Scholars is a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the president, who will select the finalists. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the semifinalists in April and the winners in May.
