Museum hosting numerous programs

The Florence County Museum recently announced the winter schedules for its Family Day at Home, Mornings at the Museum, and Afternoon Art Club programs.

The January Family Day at Home will be held Friday and Saturday. A drive through kit pickup will be held Friday from noon to 4 p.m. in the parking lot. Walk-in kit pickup will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

From toddlers to grandparents, Family Days with the Florence County Museum are sure to offer something for everyone. The FCM is still unable to host in-person programming, but we can’t let January go by without Family Day! All supplies and written instructions are included with access to online video tutorials.

Projects include:

• Super Slime! Use basic household supplies in this creative, slimy experiment. Participants will learn about polymers and chemical bonds as they create colorful slime.

• Tricks with your mind! Participants will experience the persistence of vision by creating a simple Thaumatrope.

• Simple Circuit Cards. Create a simple circuit to make your card shine! Participants will form a circuit with copper tape and small LED light to make a light-up greeting card.

Afternoon Art Club is a virtual interactive art education program for children facilitated by the Florence County Museum. Each month, students focus on a single topic, look at works of art in the FCM’s collection that represent the topic, learn new art-making techniques and create a unique work of art. Students will receive age-appropriate, standards-based, direct instruction from a S.C. Certified Art Educator with extension projects throughout the month. The FCM will host an online exhibition of students work at the end of the winter session.

Monthly lesson topics are Creating with Clay (January), Super Sculpture (February), and Mixed Media Landscapes (March). The schedule is as follows:

• 1st to 3rd grade: Registration limited to 100. Held the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of January, and 1st and 3rd Mondays of February and March from 4 to 4:45 p.m., live participation via Zoom, recorded participation via YouTube.
