Mercy Medicine sending ‘care messages’

Diabetic patients at Mercy Medicine Free Clinic are receiving “care messages” from nurse practitioner Nina Russell. Text messages are sent to prompt patients to check their blood sugar and take their medications.

Some messages include education information on diet and exercise. Mercy Medicine developed and launched this interactive program using the software CareMessage. It is designed to assist diabetics in self management.

The 12-week program was designed through an initial grant received last year and the clinic obtained a second grant to continue this program. The text messages were launched on April 1 with results coming in daily. So far, patients are extremely happy with program because it helps them remember, said Nurse Russell.

“They feel like the clinic cares about them and it is a way to reach out to them,” she said. The goal is the see better AIC results and improve finger stick blood sugar checks, she said. It create accountability and engages them in their health care.
