McLeod dedicates garden for long-time employee

As part of McLeod’s celebration of its Mission, Vision and Values Week, a dedication ceremony was held for Nathan’s Garden on May 6, on the McLeod Concourse. Nathan Brown was an iconic McLeod figure whose loyalty and commitment spanned nearly seven decades of service. At his retirement celebration, McLeod leaders announced that a new garden would be built between the central parking deck and the front of McLeod Regional Medical Center when construction of the McLeod Concourse was complete. During the ceremony, Marie Segars, Administrator of McLeod Regional Medical Center, and Dale Locklair, Vice President of Procurement and Construction spoke about Nathan and the garden.

In addition, Nathan’s Pastor, the Rev. Alfonso Porter, provided reflections about Nathan. Nathan served as a member of the McLeod Engineering team and was recognized as a devoted groundskeeper during a celebration in his honor in July of 2010, which celebrated his 65th anniversary of taking care of the McLeod campus during many years of change and expansion. He was admired by his fellow workers, physician and leadership teams for his dedication to the organization. He was an ambassador for the organization, proudly wearing his name tag at all events and during his daily treks to and from work each day.

Even after his retirement, he proudly wore his McLeod badge, (Employee ID #1), as a constant reminder of his permanent place in the McLeod family. An encourager, Nathan’s service to others epitomized the mission of McLeod. He had a personal stake in McLeod, calling it “my hospital, my flowers, my grounds.” McLeod leaders consistently sought Nathan for his wise counsel and practical advice. He was candid and hopeful and helpful. One of the few people who actually knew McLeod founder Dr. F. H. McLeod, Nathan started working in his garden when he was only 12. He did various jobs for Dr. McLeod, and later served as transporter for water, ice, coal and oxygen tanks at the McLeod Memorial Hospital. While working outdoors, Nathan frequently talked to patients and family members as they arrived and left. He was an official greeter for McLeod and enjoyed interacting with patients and guests.
