McDonald’s donating Happy Meals to two local non-profits

on Tuesday, 07 July 2015. Posted in News, Local News

The Florence area McDonald’s are participating in a program to help with child hunger during the difficult summer months thru a program called “Buy One Give One Happy Meals.” The program was launched by McDonald’s restaurants in the Coastal Carolina Co-Op in April and continues thru September. For every Happy Meal purchased on the first Monday of the month through September, McDonald’s will donate a coupon card for a free Happy Meal to a local child in need.

To participate is simple. Just go into your local McDonald’s, treat your family, or yourself to a Happy Meal, and that is it. McDonald’s takes care of tracking the number of Happy Meals sold on each “first Monday” and then distributes the coupon cards to the charity organizations. You are encouraged to talk to your children about the good they are doing to help another, and start the conversation about the issue with childhood hunger in our area.

One in 5 children in the U.S. are on food stamps. The two local charity organizations, Harvest Hope of the Pee and Help 4 Kids Florence, then distribute these coupon cards thru their child feeding programs. Remaining program dates are Aug. 3 and Sept. 7. “Through Buy One, Give One Happy Meals, we at McDonald’s can do our part to provide these children in need with a meal, and also empower our customers to be part of the giving and understand the problem they are helping address,” said Chris Valdes, local McDonald’s owner/operator.

So far, the Coastal Co-Op (encompassing Florence and Myrtle Beach, and Wilmington, NC) has donated 17,638 Happy Meals to local children in need. A large portion of these have stayed in Florence and have been evenly distributed between Harvest Hope of Pee Dee and Help 4 Kids Florence.
