Friends of Library to host Mary Ellen Donovan Fuller at annual meeting

on Tuesday, 29 December 2015. Posted in Local News

Friends of Florence County Library Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at 3 p.m in the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library in Stukes Meeting Room. The guest presenter is Mrs. Mary Ellen Donovan Fuller. Mrs. Fuller is the daughter of Attorney James Donovan whose life was portrayed in the movie “Bridge of Spies” by Tom Hanks. Donovan’s memoirs, “Strangers on a Bridge” will be available for purchase at the program.

If you are a history and/or movie buff this will be the program for you. James B. Donovan was a New York lawyer who engaged in many of the 20th century’s most intense historical events. Steven Spielberg’s movie “Bridge of Spies” is just one of his exploits. It is the first movie that Spielberg has directed since “Lincoln.” Tom Hanks who portrays Jim Donovan, does a splendid job. Spielberg calls Donovan his hero.

Jim Donovan defended the Russian spy, Col. Rudolf Abel. He also made the exchange in Berlin on a bridge and traded him for two captured Americans, America’s U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers who had been captured when his plane was shot down over Russia and Frederic Pryor, an economics student. The speaker, Mary Ellen Donovan Fuller, is James Donovan’s daughter and lives in Alcolu.

She will talk about the movie, the event itself and Jim Donovan’s other accomplishments, such as the Nuremberg trials and the Bay of Pigs to name a few. Mary Ellen arrived in South Carolina because she was Design Director in NYC for Springs Industries of Fort Mill. At one time, they were South Carolina’s biggest employer. They manufactured many products in home furnishings for retailers. She initially lived in Tega Cay and then downtown Fort Mill. She and her husband found their current location to be perfect for David’s business to flourish. They have lived there for eight years and Mary Ellen is currently writing a screenplay and novel.
