Ellard tosses third no-hitter
Junior right-hander Katelyn Ellard tossed her third-career no-hitter as Francis Marion University blanked Mars Hill 15-0 Saturday in the nightcap of the 2020 Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament.
Ellard (6-1) allowed only a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth inning, while registering eight strikeouts. She needed only 77 pitches to complete the five-inning, run-rule contest. The Cary, N.C., native was aided by junior center fielder Jordan Carlson who made a head-first diving catch in right-center field of a sinking liner to end the fourth.
For the second day in a row, Francis Marion recorded an inning where the Patriots scored double-figure runs. FMU matched the school record with 14 runs in an inning on Friday versus Mercy College and on Saturday plated 12 runs in the fourth frame against the Lions.
Junior second baseman Ashtyn Patterson lead the offense going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and three driven in. Two-time Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week award winner Carson Shannon went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs. She also extended her streak of safely reaching base to 12 contests.
Patriot sophomore third baseman Janecia Hemingway extended her hitting streak to 11 games with two hits while scoring three times and driving in one run, and freshman shortstop Megan Matsil went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and three RBIs. First baseman Addie May went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Reliever Ashley Collins (0-2) took the loss for Mars Hill.
Ellard threw a pair of no-hitters last season, one against Emmanuel College in five innings and one against Converse College in six innings. Five no-hitters by Taylor Luff is the career Patriot standard.
Francis Marion topped Mars Hill again on Sunday, 4-2.
