Downtown streetscape project underway

The City of Florence is redoing the streetscape in the core downtown area. New sidewalks, lighting, trees, landscape, as well as new asphalt on the streets, will give a complete new look, says City Manager Drew Griffin. The sidewalks are being done in a combination of brick and concrete. The intersections will include bluestone.

There will be new tree wells and new plantings. Work is currently underway on the 100 blocks of North and South Dargan Street. The streetscape work will continue north on Dargan to Highway 52 and south on Dargan, past the library to National Cemetery Road.

The sidewalk and street improvements will also include the 100 block of West Evans Street, 100 block of East Evans Street and Irby Street to Cheves Street. Bidding on the sidewalk improvement on Irby Street will go out in the next week or two, Griffin noted.

While the width of the sidewalks will remain about the same, they will appear to be wider, Griffin said, explaining that the brick work will go from the edge of the curb all the way up the buildings making the sidewalks seem wider. “We’re trying to make downtown as pedestrian friendly as we can,” he commented.

The streetscape project is a complete redesign, he continued. It should be completed in mid to late summer, around the same time as completion on the parking deck and apartments, and Francis Marion University’s new Health Sciences Building. “It is exciting what is going on.” Griffin said. “It definitely will be very nice and a new downtown.”
