Florence residents young and old joined together Aug. 6 to celebrate National Night Out at four locations around the city and county.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office hosted its NNO event at the Leatherman Senior Center. Attendees had a chance to eat and fellowship with members of law enforcement. Other NNO sites were the Church Hill Apartment Complex, the House of God Church in Greater Wilson Heights, and the Northwest Community Center.

At the House of God, Florence City Police Chief Allen Heider spoke with residents and assured them that law enforcement was there to serve them and that it is vital that the community and the police department work together to deter crime.

At the Churchill Apartments, members of the Florence Housing Authority and volunteers served hot dogs, chips and drinks to those in attendance.

Along with serving a meal, volunteers at the Northwest Community Center handed out bags filled with school supplies.

The Leatherman Center was dressed up in patriotic red, white and blue balloons and banners. There was food, dancing and even an appearance by “McGruff the Crime Dog.”

National Night Out is an annual community-building event which promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood cooperation to make our neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live by involving the public, community crime-watch organizations, churches, local businesses and law enforcement. The national event is held the first Tuesday of August each year.
