City cuts ribbon on new Old Carver Station homes
Calling it ‘a proud moment for the City of Florence,’ officials cut the ribbon on the first two of six new homes that are part of an innovative private-public residential housing project in northwest Florence.

The City of Florence held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Old Carver Station on Jan. 30.

The ceremony was held in recognition for the completion of the first two of the six homes slated for the development.

The homes are located at 1000 and 1001 Myers Ervin Way, at the corner of West Sumter and Alexander streets. Construction of the homes is a result of a public/ private investment partnership between the City of Florence and Swinton Builders, LLC.

“This is a very special day,” said Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela. Not many people bought into the idea that this could work. Some said ‘You can’t build homes there because no one would buy them.’ Others thought we were flat crazy. Look where we are today.”

City Manager Drew Griffin echoed the mayor with similar sentiments.

“This is concrete evidence that what some people said wasn’t possible, is possible.”

Councilwoman Teresa Myers Ervin said much research went into planning project.

“This was not a fly by night effort,” she said. “We did our homework. I am thankful to the mayor, the city manager, and many others who believed in this project.”

Old Carver Station is the latest phase of revitalization in Northwest Florence. These new single-family homes are approximately 1,300 square feet and feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a front porch.

In 2019, the city also completed a $2.3 million Sumter Street Streetscapes project that enhanced street beautification with new sidewalks, street repaving, and the addition of bike lanes.

This development represents the city’s continued efforts with goals set forth in the Florence Neighborhood Revitalization Plan which was initiated in 2014. The comprehensive revitalization plan is intended to enhance the overall desirability of Florence as a place to live, increase the city’s regional competitiveness, set the stage for catalytic development and build off recent success within and around the downtown area.
