With a lineup featuring four freshmen and one sophomore, the Francis Marion University golf team finished in 13th place after the final round of the Wofford Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament on Tuesday (April 2).

The 54-hole event was contested on the par-72, 6,648 yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

Furman University completed its wire-to-wire victory in the team competition, posting a final-round team score of 278, for a 54-hole total of 25-under-par 839. Austin Peay State University (866) finished second, Radford University (867) claimed third place, USC Upstate (871) came in fourth place, and Gardner-Webb University and Belmont University (873) tied for fifth.

Freshman Grant Sellers’ final-round one-over-par 73 paced Francis Marion on Tuesday, giving him a total of 219 and a tie for 22nd in the players’ standings. The McBee native tied for the team-lead with three birdies for the day, giving him eight for the tournament.

Fellow freshman Grainger Howle (74-71-77=222) tied for 36th place. A Darlington native, Howle registered a pair of birdies on Tuesday to bring his three-round total to nine, the most by a Patriot over the 54-hole event.

Other Francis Marion golfers included freshman Pierre De Caevel (76-79-75=230), who tied for 63rd, sophomore Michael Rials (76-83-75=234), who finished 78th, and redshirt freshman McClure Thompson (79-76-82=237), who tied for 81st.

After sharing the 36-hole lead, Furman’s Jack Crosby (203) shot a four-under round of 68 to win medalist honors by six strokes. FMU concludes its season at the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday, April 15.
