Veteran’s Park to host Veteran’s Day event
The Florence Veterans Park will host the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11 Retired USAF four star General Hansford T. ‘HT’ Johnson will be the guest speaker. General Johnson is a native of South Carolina and was the first graduate of the USAF Academy to earn the rank of general. As an Air Force pilot for over 33 years, his career included two wars, including 423 combat missions in Vietnam.
Among General Johnson’s many decorations are Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Silver Star for heroism. Following retirement from the USAF, General Johnson enjoyed a successful civilian career until President George W. Bush appointed General Johnson as Secretary of the Navy in 2003. At the ceremony, the park will dedicate a monument to the men and women of the USAF. The monument is given by Brown Memorials. Also, the Boykin Spaniel sculpture, originally a part of the Home Safe monument, “Lady,” will be donated by sculptor Alex Palkovich. And, 36 names of Pee Dee area veterans will be added to the Wall of Honor bringing the total to 648.
Live music will be provided by the Crusaders’ Choir from All Saints Episcopal Day School and taped music will be provided Eddie Collins Productions. The USAF JROTC Detachment from Wilson High School will provide the Color Guard and assist as needed. The Florence Veterans Honor Guard will provide Taps.
