Students showcase vocal talents
Twenty-seven students participated in a vocal talent competition at Florence-Darlington Technical College’s SiMT recently. The annual program known as District One’s Vocal Star is the culmination of a qualifying event which began with almost 90 students vying for a chance to participate in the talent competition.
At the elementary level Jennalyn Gray, a fourth grade student at Dewey Carter Elementary, was named runner-up with a performance of “Somewhere Out There” by Jorner Mann & Well. Winner of the elementary division was Dewey Carter sixth grader Jacob Gray who sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon.
Middle School vocal star runner-up was singer and guitar player Tyler Russell, a 7th grade student at Southside Middle who sang “Those Magic Changes,” from Grease the Musical. Elementary division vocal star winner was Jaden Pratt, a Southside Middle School 8th grader who won singing “Give Me You” by Shana Wilson.
At the high school level, South Florence took both winning positions. Freshman Tripp Taylor came in as runner-up with “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone and sophomore Joshua Anderson’s performance of “Fly Me to the Moon” by Bart Howard secured first place.
Celebrity hosts for this event included Florence 1’s very own Mary Woodward, Teacher of the Year 16-17; L. Megerlyn Davis, Teacher of the Year, 17-18; and Sharri Duncan, Teacher of the Year 18-19. Florence 1 Schools Performing Arts Coordinator organized the event.
