Students named National Merit finalists
Two Florence 1 students named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program last fall have advanced to the next level of competition.
Both Alice Lee and Annie Kate Watson of Wilson High School were selected as national finalists. They will compete with 15,000 national finalists for college scholarships worth more than $31 million.
“It is with great pride that we announce that Annie Kate Watson and Alice Lee have advanced to National Merit Finalists,” said Wilson High School Principal Dr. Eric Robinson. “Both are outstanding scholars and represent the true character of a Wilson High School Tiger. We wholeheartedly congratulate the both of them.”
To advance to the final round of competition, semifinalist had to submit a detailed application that provided information about their academic records, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors and awards.
Each semifinalist had to be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirmed the student’s earlier score on the qualifying test.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a nonprofit established in 1955. Its scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and more than 400 businesses and higher-education institutions.
