Stokes Eye Centers building new facility in downtown Florence
Stokes Regional Eye Centers officially broke ground Nov. 6 on a new facility to be constructed at 367 West Evans Street, near the Federal Building. Dr. Hunter Stokes Sr., along with his son, Mark R. Stokes, and center physicians Isam Zakhour, Mark Ross, Gregory A. King and Francisco A. Folgar, participated in the traditional dirt shoveling ceremony after brief remarks from Mayor Stephen Wukela and Dr. Mark Stokes. Stokes Regional Eye Center began treating patients in downtown Florence in 1938.
The clinic was started by Dr. J. Howard Stokes Sr. and he was later joined by his three sons, Dr. Hunter R. Stokes Sr., Dr. J. Stokes Jr. and Dr. Parker Stokes. The office moved to a new facility across the street from McLeod hospital in 1978. “We are very excited to be returning to downtown Florence and becoming a part of the revitalization of the downtown area,” said Dr. Mark Stokes.
