Post 1 presents annual civic awards
Florence’s Fred H. Sexton American Legion Post 1 normally hosts an annual civic awards banquet to recognize outstanding public servants of the year. The banquet will not be held this year due to the pandemic, but Post 1 officials wish to recognize these outstanding citizens.
Teacher of the Year: Alvinise ‘Nicole’ Scipio, West Florence High School. Scipio teaches biology and biomedical sciences. She is highly regarded by her school, its students and Florence One School District.
Firemen of the Year: Capt. Gary Dicks and Firefighter Loc Nguyen. These men teamed up to rescue a man trapped in the kitchen of his burning home. There was so much smoke that he couldn’t get out. The firefighters found him and brought him to safety.
Law Enforcement Officer of the Year: Lance Cpl. Edward Sieban. Officer Sieban is assigned to patrol duty and he has worked on the Community Action Team. He established a great working relationship with the various neighborhood watch groups. This strengthened his community connections for the department.
The American Legion Traffic Safety Award: Senior Police Officer Steven Martin. Officer Martin specializes in traffic collision investigations and is assigned to the Fatal Accident Investigation Team because of his training and experience.
The American Legion Award for Bravery: Lance Cpl. Kevin Buxton: Officer Buxton is a narcotics investigator. Lance Cpl. Buxton was on a team executing a warrant last October when a suspect bolted out the back door and shot at him. Buxton dove to the ground to get out of the line of fire. The suspect continued to run. Buxton got up and continued the pursuit. He was shot at again as the man ran into another building’s stairwell. He was finally apprehended without incident. Buxton displayed extreme courage to pursue while under fire which led to the arrest of the suspect.
