Kids helping kids while learning about food insecurity

on Wednesday, 05 August 2015. Posted in News, Local News

Help 4 Kids Florence hosted an opportunity for children and their mothers to visit their warehouse at 2420 Hoffermeyer Road to learn about what the organization does for hungry children in Florence County. The morning of July 23 began with a story about two friends, Emily and Margaret. Margaret learned about “food insecurity” when she opened her friends refrigerator and found it almost empty.

This story illustrated how hunger affects so many children today and how sometimes working parents have to choose between medicine and food, rent and food, or gas and food. Then the children were made aware of what Help4Kids does for hungry children in their schools. A child coming to school hungry doesn’t have to happen in Florence County with the weekend meals provided by Help 4 Kids. The children were given a tour of the warehouse and shown the food items that go into the bags.

They drew pictures and used stickers to decorate the brown bags the food items are delivered in. Afterwards they manned the assembly line and packed over 100 meals that will be delivered once school begins in August. Help4Kids can feed one child for the academic year with a donation of $100. Several children gave money to purchase food for the bags. About 25 children ages four to 12 attended the event with their parents. Help4Kids plans to host another event in the fall. Hungry children aren’t just in far away countries, they are right here in the schools our children attend Monday through Friday 180 days each year.

Even though childhood hunger is very sad the children on this Thursday morning were shown what they can do to help. Making our young children aware of this sad social issue and showing them how they can help expands the number of citizens that can join Help4Kids in eliminating weekend hunger.
