Florence One approves 2020-21 school calendar
Schools within the Florence One School District will operate on a new schedule next year.
By a vote of 7-2, the Florence One Board of Trustees voted Thursday to move the district to a year-round schedule for the 2020-21 school year. Board members Alexis Pipkins and John Galloway voted against the year-round schedule.
With the year-round schedule, teachers will return to school on July 27 and students on Aug. 3. A fall intercession is scheduled for Oct. 5-9 and a spring intercession from March 29 to April 9.
Also, the first semester will end prior to the winter break.
A survey sent by the school district to employees and parents during January indicated that a sizeable majority was in favor of a year-round schedule.
To make the transition easier, Board member Trisha Cagle said schools would excuse absences by students who had family vacations previously scheduled.
For students needing day care during the intermissions, Cagle said some local day cares would be willing to follow the district’s schedule. The district will also provide free child care for the first year for students.
In other business, the board also approved Superintendent Dr. Richard O’Malley’s recommendation to appoint Michelle McBride as assistant superintendent for K-5 Instruction and Gregory Hall as assistant superintendent for 6-12 Instruction. Both McBride and Hall will begin their duties on March 2.
The 2020-2021 Academic Opportunities Guide was also approved by the board.
