Wilson IB student headed to Chicago
Zachary Zhao, an IB student at Wilson High School, has advanced to the semi-final of the International German Olympics 2016. Zhao is one of the 14 best students out of 260 applicants to prevail in the preliminary round. The selection and announcement of the winners were made by the Goethe-Institut Chicago, the official cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Based on the motto Be The One, the Goethe-Institut Chicago is searching for two “Olympic athletes“ to represent the USA in Berlin next summer. The participants will prove their knowledge of the German language and culture in a competition with students from 50 different nations.
On Dec. 4-5, Zhao will travel to Chicago to participate in the US semi-final round held as an “Olympic pentathlon” – reading, listening, speaking, writing and presenting will be tested. In this all expenses-paid trip, Zhao will visit the Christkindlmarket, a German-style Christmas market, and will view the Chicago skyline from the 94th floor of the John Hancock Tower. Zhao is a student of Dr. Lucia Huang, German teacher at Wilson High School.
