School board names new superintendent

By unanimous vote, the Florence School District One Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Richard O’Malley as the district’s new superintendent.

O’Malley is currently superintendent of Edison Public Schools, a 15,000-student district in Edison, NJ. Prior to this post, he served as Superintendent of Schools in Aberdeen, NJ (2008-11) and as Superintendent of Schools in Mountainside, NJ, (2005-08) for a total of 13 years’ experience as a superintendent.

“Our entire board was very pleased with Dr. O’Malley’s skills and experiences,” said Florence One School Board Chairman Barry Townsend. “He possesses the qualities identified by our community in our leadership profile and has a proven track record in academic leadership that will serve all of our students well now and in the future.”

O’Malley was one of three finalists selected by the board. All three finalists spent a day in the district touring schools, meeting employees and members of the community, and undergoing a second interview with the board. Other finalists were Dr. Shane Robbins, Superintendent of Schools in Fortville, IN, and Dr. Ronald Hargrave, Superintendent of Scotland County Schools in Laurinburg, NC.

“All three finalists were excellent candidates. We believe, however, that Dr. O’Malley is the best fit for Florence One,” said Townsend. “He also received very favorable reviews from staff and community members who have interacted with him during this process.” O’Malley has served as Superintendent of Edison Public Schools since 2011. In addition to his superintendent posts, he has formerly served as a mentor for employed elementary, middle and high school principals through the New Jersey Foundation for Educational Administration, as well as a member of the Raritan Township Committee in New Jersey.

O’Malley will assume his duties as Florence One’s new superintendent on July 1.
