New coaches named at West Florence High School
At a called Board meeting, the Florence One Board of Trustees approved the appointment of two new coaches at West Florence High. Daryl Jarvis has been named the basketball coach and Warren Coker, the new volleyball coach. In addition to their coaching appointments, both Jarvis and Coker will be employed as academic enrichment teachers at West Florence.
Daryl Jarvis brings 13 years of teaching experience and 17 years of coaching experience (five of those years as head coach) to West Florence High School. He most recently served as a teacher and coach in Richland School District One, where he was head basketball coach (2011-present), sports and fitness management instructor, and assistant boys’/girls’ track coach at C. A. Johnson High School in Columbia.
Under Jarvis’ leadership as head basketball coach, the C. A. Johnson basketball team advanced to the second round of the playoffs during his first year as head coach. The team advanced to the third round of the state playoffs during his second year as head coach, and C. A. Johnson won the state championship during his third year as head coach.
At C. A. Johnson, Jarvis received the 2014 Region 3A Coach of the Year and the High School Sports Report Coach of the Year awards. He also received the District Seven Excellence in Coaching Award and was a Richland One Coach of the Year nominee.
Jarvis’ resume reflects additional assistant/associate basketball coaching stints at Eau Clair, Brookland-Cayce, and Ridge View high schools.
He is affiliated with the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association, and the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Jarvis has also operated and served at several basketball team camps at local high schools and colleges including the University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, Presbyterian College, and South Carolina State University.
Jarvis received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina (2004), and a Master of Sports Science Degree from the United States Sports Academy, Daphne, Alabama (2013). He also served in the United States Army Reserves, Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Lee, Virginia.
Warren Coker previously served as a physical education teacher and head middle school volleyball coach at Darlington Middle School. While at Darlington Middle, Coker worked as varsity boys’ tennis coach at Darlington High School (August 2017-present).
Prior to service in Darlington County School District, Warren worked at Sumter High as physical education teacher, (2000-2017); unified sports educator (2015-2017) head volleyball coach (2001-17) head varsity boys tennis coach, (2016-17) head varsity softball coach (2007-201) and head JV volleyball coach and varsity pitching coach (2000-2007). He has also served a teacher and JV softball coach in Clarendon School District Three.
Coker received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of South Carolina (2000); Coastal Carolina University certification in driver education, (2008) and a Master of Science Degree College Athletics from Coker College.
He is affiliated with the following organizations: South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports; South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association; South Carolina Special Olympics Volunteer and Coach; and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Coker has also received the following honors:
Region Tennis Championship Coach; Region 5, 5A Boys Tennis Coach of the Year, 2017; South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association 20 Year Service Award Recipient; Top 4 finalists for Sumter High School Teacher of the Year, 2013 and National Conference Representative of the American Alliance for Physical Education Recreation and Dance, 2011; Region 6, 4A Volleyball Region Coach of the Year, 2005-2010; Volleyball Region Championship Coach, 2005- 2010; and All Star Team Coach, 2005.
