CHARLES NELSON, WEST FLORENCE TENNIS COACH Named Boys’ Tennis Coach of the Year By SC Athletic Coaches Association

West Florence High School retiring Coach Charles Nelson has been named the 2016-17 Boys’ Tennis Coach of the Year by the Board of the Directors of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.

Nelson received the award on Sunday, July 23, at the Charleston Convention Center. This past school year, Nelson led the West Florence Tennis Team to win the Lower State title for the eighth time.

Among his stellar accomplishments as West Florence tennis coach are seasons with the following record finishes: 475-69 regular; 588-108 overall; and 358-48 region.

Nelson has seen 14 players to individual state championship matches including Andrew Halus this past year. From 1983-2008, the team produced five individual state champions, and two players have won the doubles state championship. Eleven players have represented the team in the North/South Senior Match including Andrew Halus in 2017. Nelson’s team has also produced 13 All-State players including Burns Grich in 2017.

To his credit, the Knights have won 24 region titles from 1985 to 2017, and the team won state championships in 1985, 1986, 2007 and 2008. Nelson has had the honor of serving as the North/South coach for three years. This is the fifth time that Nelson has received the South Carolina Tennis Coach of the Year Award; and, in 2007, he was nominated for the National Coach of the Year.
