Two Literary Clubs entertained with skit

Edith Hicks and five friends entertained the ladies of The Sidney Lanier Literary Club and The Heritage Literary Club by performing a skit at the clubs’ April 18 meeting held in her home.

A cast of six performed the one-act play, “Just A Matter of Time.” This was a comedy written by a Winthrop student, probably in the 1950s, said Mrs. Hicks. She chose the play from a book of one-act plays that she found at the Florence Library. It was about a soldier from the War Between the States returning home.

Mrs. Hicks asked five of her non-club member friends to participate as play readers so that the club’s few members could enjoy the skit. Since the Heritage Literary Club meets on the same date, they were invited for a joint meeting which helped increase the audience.

There were 23 people in attendance.

The cast featured a grandmother (played by Mrs. Hicks), a mother, a married daughter, an unmarried daughter, a husband and a neighbor/friend. For costumes, the performers used accessories, such as a shawl or a broach, as an indication of the time period.

This production was actually a playreading in which cast members read their lines, noted Mrs. Hicks.

“It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed to enjoy our rough production,” she commented.
