‘Mary Poppins’ brings musical adventure to FLT
Mary Poppins, everyone’s favorite practically perfect nanny, flies onto the Florence Little Theatre stage for a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical adventure. Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” opens FLT’s 2015-16 season on Friday evening, Sept. 11. Eleven performances are scheduled during the Sept. 11-20 run. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday with additional matinees on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Original music and lyrics are by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Book is by Julian Fellowes.
New songs and additional music and lyrics are by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The Disney musical was co-created by Cameron Mackintosh. One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, “Mary Poppins” is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical. Based on the books by P. L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven TONY Awards, including Best Musical.
The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”
“Mary Poppins” is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers, and astonishing stagecraft. It is family friendly and appropriate for all ages. The FLT production of “Mary Poppins” is underwritten by Wells Fargo, directed by Scarlett Knight with musical direction by Shaw Thompson and Robin Thompson. The cast features Rebecca Thompson as Mary Poppins, Frankie Sullivan as Bert, Ella Naylor as Jane Banks, Caleb Howell as Michael Banks, Ben Daniel as George Banks, and Celly Padgett Kahn as Winifred Banks.
