Judicial center unveils murals
A large crowd turned out Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Florence County Judicial Center for the unveiling of three murals painted by local artist Robert Garey.
The paintings greet customers upon arrival in the rotunda of the $40 million building. Each of the 8-feet by 10-feet paintings has a Florence setting. The centerpiece is of the famous “Mars Bluff Affair’ with Gideon Gibson in the center of the panel. The Florence County Historical Society commissioned Garey to create the mural.
Garey grew up in Florence and has been producing artwork since childhood. He lived and maintained a studio in New York City for 25 years before returning to his hometown in 2012.
Since his return he has shown his work at ArtFields in 2013, '15, and '16. In 2017 had a solo show at the Florence County Museum entitled “The Fiddler’s Tale” that included the works he had shown at ArtFields. He has been producing murals in Florence as well as showing his paintings in different venues in Florence and in Charleston.
Garey was joined at Thursday’s unveiling by his family and many friends.
