City hosts watermedia events
Paintings will be on display in the FMU Gallery Place through Dec. 20.
Ashley Arakas of the Grand Strand took “The Best In Show” at the 42nd Annual South Carolina Watermedia Society Exhibition held in Florence last weekend at the new Francis Marion University Place Gallery on North Dargan Street. She was awarded $1,000 for her painting “Enxhi.”
The exhibition showcased the best watercolor and acrylics in the state. Now a national event, this prestigious competition includes watermedia from as far afield as Alaska and California. The show features 75 works of art and 30 award winners. This group of winning artworks will travel the state next year under the auspices of the State Museum.
Kicking off the events on Nov. 8 was a Plein Air Competition with painters at work all over downtown, capturing the old and the new in their chosen medium. Their work, available for sale, was displayed in Meeting Room I of the Hyatt Place Hotel through Saturday evening. In addition, Anne Hightower/Patterson White presented a watercolor demonstration in the lobby of the Hyatt on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, a demonstration was presented by Russell Jewell in the lobby of the Hotel Florence.
The downtown area was one of the stars of the weekend. In addition to the shows, society members displayed works in Carolina Bank, El Agave, MiLadies, Dolce Vita, Edible Arrangements, Hotel Florence and Victor’s.
The exhibition paintings will be on display in the FMU Gallery through Dec. 20.
