Role Descriptions and Casting Considerations:
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a rock opera, a story told completely through song, dance, and stage movement to modern popular music. There are no spoken lines. Therefore, all onstage performers must be able to sing and move. For specific roles and the demands of each named character, see the descriptions below.
NARRATOR: Female, (soprano with extended mix/ belt range, low F# to high G). The narrator is our host, and through word and song guides the audience gently through the story of Joseph and his brothers. The narrator must be adept at both being the focal point and then “blending” into the scene. An excellent singer, communicator, and storyteller.
JOSEPH: Male, (high tenor, vocal range low A to high G). Eleventh son of Jacob and Jacob’s favorite. Looking for a strong actor with a confident but charming personality. Must move and sing very well.
JACOB: Male, plays about 60-75 years old (baritone, low A to C). Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favors Joseph as the first son of his favorite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph and his brothers. Jacob needs to be a good actor and singer who can move reasonably well.
PHARAOH: Male, (baritone, low B to high G#). Pharaoh is the most powerful man in Egypt and considered a god on earth. He is in a strange psychological place and is desperately searching for the truth in his dreams. The character is typically an homage to pop stars like Elvis.
POTIPHAR: Male, plays about 50-70 years old (baritone, vocal range D to B). Potiphar is a rich, self-indulgent and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist who buys Joseph as a slave. Strong actor and singer. Also performs in chorus ensemble.
MRS. POTIPHAR: Female, strong dancer. Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own way and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. She is razor sharp, beautiful and confident. She will also be a part of the chorus ensemble.
JOSEPH’S BROTHERS: Males, Joseph’s 11 brothers (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin), are jealous of Joseph being their father’s favorite son, sell him into slavery, and ultimately realize their wrongdoing. All must be skilled singers and dancers, three have solos: The country style “One More Angel in Heaven”, “Canaan Days”, and “Benjamin Calypso”.
BUTLER & BAKER: Males, (tenors). The butler and the baker both work for the Pharaoh. They are both decent men in precarious situations. They need to be good singers and honest actors. May double as brothers and will be part of the chorus ensemble.
Approximately 12 women. three per voice part, covering voice ranges soprano I and II, alto I and II. The women will play multiple roles throughout the show including wives to Jacob and his sons and citizens of Egypt. They sing and dance throughout the entire show. Looking for energetic singers who move well. Featured roles and solos will come from the ensemble.
Male ensemble is comprised mostly of the brothers, baker, butler and Potiphar, but up to 4 additional men (2 tenor/2 bass) may be cast for the ensemble and supporting/swing roles.
CHILDRENS’ CHORUS: A mixed group of 12 to 15 girls and boys, ages 8 to 13 years, who sing and dance along with main characters throughout the show.
PIT CHORUS – 6 to 10 strong vocalists of any combination of soprano, alto, tenor, and bass who serve as vocal reinforcement for the cast onstage. No memorization necessary, these singers will hold books and sing from the pit during the performances. Pit singers are required to attend musical rehearsals to learn parts. Those auditioning for pit chorus only do not have to perform a dance audition. Telephone 843-662-3731.
