Starr Ward Chamber Series will feature PUBLIQuartet
The innovative PUBLIQuartet will be featured at the March Starr Ward Chamber Music Series. The concert will be Sunday, March 13, at 5 p.m. in the banquet room at Victor’s Bistro. The program by this unique chamber ensemble will be followed by a meet the artist reception. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
The program will feature some favorite and some new works including Villa-Lobos, Stravinsky, Thelonious Monk, Debussy Charlie Parker and others. Dubbed “independent-minded” by The New Yorker, PUBLIQuartet’s creative programming lends a fresh perspective to the Classical music scene.
Founded in 2010 and dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet, PUBLIQuartet was selected as Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places Ensemble at the 2013 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition, also winning CAG’s Sylvia Ann Hewlett Adventurous Artist Prize.
Hailed by WQXR as a “…‘genre-independent’ quartet that not only vehemently supports emerging composers, but also composes collectively – a rare occurrence in this field,” the group received Chamber Music America’s 2015 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz, and world chamber music.
PQ’s innovative programs span the classical canon and also feature open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet. The Quartet began the 2015-16 season with a busy summer, including festival debuts at the Chautauqua Institution on the Logan Chamber Music Series, the Raritan River Festival (NJ) and the Huntington Summer Arts Festival (NY), as well as a special appearance with Grammy award-winning jazz pianist/composer Billy Childs at the Newport Jazz Festival. Upcoming highlights this season include PQ’s annual PUBLIQ Access showcase at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, and the Jefferson Academy of Music in Columbus, OH..
