Scout builds dock at Lee State Park
Griffin Walters has spent the past four months planning and building a 68-foot dock at Lee State Park in Bishopville as his Eagle Scout Project. Griffin, 14, has been a Boy Scout in Troop 477 for three years. He attends Florence Christian School and is the son of Jim and Darlene Walters of Florence.
Griffin says he chose the project to give back to the scouting community and because local campers at the park requested it. He met with Park Ranger Brad Lane in January to discuss the dimensions of the dock and where to put it. The ranger wanted the dock in the wilderness area behind the cabin and artesian well where most scouts stay.
Work started in early March with the troop support during a camp out. Griffin and his dad worked from March to April every weekend and all through spring break, finishing the project on April 30. Griffin also raised funds for the project by soliciting cash donations and building materials. The cost to build the dock was a little more than $1,300. The labor included 1,500 hours of work. He received his Eagle Award during a ceremony on May 23 along with five other scouts.
