Darlington Kiwanis Club donates backpacks for foster children
The Darlington Kiwanis Club donated 14 backpacks full of supplies for foster children in Darlington County. Annie Helm with the S.C. Department of Social Services accepts the donation from Kiwanis President-Elect and City of Darlington Assistant Fire Chief Charles Bailey and Kiwanis Board member Lisa Rock. “The Kiwanis mission is serving the children of the world, and it’s sad so many close to home are hurting,” Rock said. “These backpacks will hopefully be a small token to show these children that someone cares about them, that they are not forgotten.” Based on data from July 1, 2019, there are more than 100 children in the foster care system from Darlington County families. This is the first year the Darlington club has put together backpacks, but it won’t be the last. Rock said they plan to start in June next year to gather more donations, books, and supplies. The Darlington Kiwanis Club meets every other Thursday at 1 p.m. at Darlington Country Club.
