Chicken bog benefit for Darrell Hickson sponsored by Cooks for Christ

Darrell Hickson is 70 years old and lives in Lamar. He worked in the auto parts business for years, and then worked at CP&L for 19 years and Blanchard Machinery for five years. At the age of 60, he was diagnosed with a very rare debilitating disease called Stiff Person Syndrome or Moersh-Woltman Syndrome. It is a neuromuscular disease that is so rare that only one in a million suffer from it. The cause is not known and there is no cure. Sometimes it takes years for a diagnosis. It is also classified as an auto-immune disease. The body builds up antibodies against itself and although Darrell looks normal on the outside, the disease wreaks havoc on the inside. The antibodies affect the neurotransmitters in the brain that sends messages to the back and legs. The antigad blood test given to Darrell should be less than 5 and his is greater than 25,000.

Darrell was disabled two months after being diagnosed in early 2010. He has fallen 12 times since and one of those times he broke his shoulder. So far, the disease has only affected his back and legs causing his back and leg muscles to stiffen so tightly that they feel as they will break. If not treated, the bones can break. Darrell has been so blessed that his whole body is not involved. It is very painful and falling does not help the situation. Darrell has not been able to drive for several years now and is in a wheelchair. He desires a handicapped wheelchair van in order to load his motorized wheelchair and also be able to drive and give him some independence. Also, structural changes need to be done to his home to accommodate his needs.

Cooks for Christ is hosting a benefit for Darrell on Thursday, March 7, at the West Florence Fire Station on Pine Needles Road in Florence. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and dinner will be served from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Drive through lanes will be open for your convenience and a bake sale will be held all day. Plates are $8 each. Lunch and dinner can be delivered for orders of seven (7) or more plates. To schedule a delivery, please complete a delivery form and fax or email according to instructions provided on the form.

The menu consists of chicken bog, green beans, slaw and bread. We promise your meal will be delicious!
