Book of Common Prayer conference set for Saturday
The Episcopal Forum of South Carolina, in collaboration with St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church of Florence, will host a one-day conference, The Book of Common Prayer: A Pathway to Spirituality on Saturday, Feb. 3, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The conference fee $35 which includes a light breakfast and lunch.
The conference will be led by Dr. Derek Olsen, a biblical scholar and engaged layman in the Episcopal Church. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, an S.T.M. degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and served as a pastoral vicar of a large Lutheran (ELCA) church in the Atlanta suburbs before beginning doctoral work and being received into the Episcopal Church. He completed his doctorate degree in New Testament in 2011 from Emory University under the direction of Luke Timothy Johnson. He is married to an Episcopal priest and lives in Baltimore.
Dr. Olsen’s published works include St. Augustine’s Prayer Book (liturgical editor), “Reading Matthew with Monks,” and “The Honey of Souls.” He has a new book in progress “Psalming Christ.”
Have you ever wondered if there was some kind of a guide to living a deeper, richer spiritual life that seamlessly incorporated scripture alongside the wisdom of the Church? There is and you are invited to come find out as Dr. Olsen shows how everyday Christians can grow closer to God, providing a guide to Prayer Book spirituality.
The conference is open to all. Register by going to www.episcopalforum.com
St. Luke’s Lutheran Church is located at 1201 Cherokee Rd.
