Trinity-Byrnes Upper School Math Team competed well at the SCISA State Math Meet competition held Feb. 2 in Sumter.

Special honors go to Eric Liang, a senior, who took first place overall and Adam Cheng, a senior, who took eighth place overall. Harrison Corns, a junior, took first place on the second team.

The TBCS team 1 took second place overall and Team 2 took 10th place overall.

Members of the winning team were Bang Tran, Eddie Buckhouse, Bennett Joyce, Adam Cheng, and Eric Liang.

Team 2 members included John Saverance, Sky Yu, Harrison Corns, Trae Buck and Amy Maistros.

Other Division I team winners included Hammond School, Columbia, first, and Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, third.

The High School Math Meet is open to students in grades 9-12. Each school may enter no more than two teams of five students each. During the competition all students take a one-hour multiple choice written math test consisting of 50 questions. Following the test, each team member, one at a time, participates in a speed round of five questions.

“The test scores at this year’s math meet were outstanding,” said Larry Watt, SCISA executive director. “The competition becomes stiffer each year. We congratulate the winners, and we appreciate all of the work the students and their sponsors did prior to the meet.”

The High School Math Meet is an annual SCISA event conducted in two divisions, determined by high school enrollment.

A total of 310 students on 62 teams representing 38 schools participated in the two-day event.
