Florence Biggest Loser back for 2016
United Way of Florence County is now registering for their 3rd annual Biggest Loser competition. Although still fairly new, the positive response from Florence County residents has allowed the competition to not only succeed, but continue to grow. This year, eight additional spots have been opened up bringing the total number of contestant spots to 80 which is 20 more than what the competition started with in 2014.
Along with the increase in contestant spots, the UWFC has also added on new activities for contestants this year, including a mentor night with previous contestants for moral support and encouragement and a healthy potluck where contestants can invite their family members to participate. The UWFC is also excited to partner with the Francis Marion University Men’s Basketball team this year as part of one of the competition’s physical challenges.
“We are constantly trying to think of new ways to not only keep the competition fun, but to also provide as much healthy lifestyle guidance as possible,” said Wendy Bird, UWFC President. “We have many contestants who say by the end they were not even concerned about winning the prizes anymore; they were much more excited to see how their health was improving for the better.”
This year’s Biggest Loser will run from Jan. 12 to March 24, 2016 and is sponsored by McLeod Health & Fitness, Health Facilities Credit Union, Armstrong Wealth & Management, First Bank, HillSouth, and Belk. For a $150 registration fee, contestants receive a free membership to McLeod Health & Fitness for the duration of the contest which includes personal training sessions and nutrition counseling.
They will also be able to participate in various events throughout the challenge, including kayaking with Naturally Outdoors and healthy cook-offs. At the end of the competition, several awards will be presented including two $500 grand prizes to the contestants who have the greatest percentage loss in weight and inches.
