Artist releases two historical prints

Local artist Debbie Broadway recently completed two paintings which she feels have past and current historical significance. One is “Harriet Tubman: ‘Moses’, Scout, Soldier, Woman of God.” The other is “Charleston Citadel: The Ring.”

She decided to do a representational painting about Harriet Tubman after learning her fascinating story. She has included a one page summary on Tubman’s life to accompany the numbered and signed prints.

“Harriet Tubman was an incredible person and my focus was her accomplishments as a woman,” Broadway said. “I did not know her significance in the Civil War which included being responsible for leading 700 folks to freedom, in addition to other accomplishments in spite of a severe disability. Nor did I know that she was a soldier, spy and, as a woman, held a strategic leadership role including training others.

“Although I am a Southerner I appreciate and respect what she did to help others in much danger.”

“As for The Citadel painting of it ring, I learned that not all who get their diploma get their ring, so it is a big deal.”
